Movie Review: Waiting For Superman

The education system is always a topic of great debate. The latest documentary to tackle the subject is Waiting for Superman. Challenging the traditional school system, Waiting for Superman follows several families as they strive to obtain the best possible education for their children. Engaging and disturbing, the film leaves many questions unanswered.
The documentary does a wonderful job showcasing the emotional rollercoaster families face when entering into an educational lottery system for their child. Knowing the simple act of their child's number being selected could change their child's life forever and the disappointment of missing out on an opportunity to get the best education possible.
My only real disappointment with the film was the focus on charter schools as the solution. The key behind the success of many students is having parents who value education and push their children to do well in school. These children tend to do better in school - whether they attend a charter or public school.
The parents that care about their child's education are the ones who enter their children into the educational lottery system. So charter schools benefit by having only students with parents that value education and will do what it takes to help their child succeed in school. Public schools don't. The film falls short by not taking this into account and instead focusing too heavily on bad teachers and poor public school systems failing our children.
For anyone that cares about education and preparing the students of today to be future leaders, this is film worth watching.
