Movie Review: American Hustle

Viewers get an early Christmas present from Director David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook). This film is much more than a shell game played by con artists in 1978. No, this movie is about characters, control and relationships draped under comb overs, behind tinted glasses and inside polyester suits. A brilliant script with many laughs is overshadowed by an even stronger cast.
Sometimes movies with too many previous Oscar nominees & winners don’t offer each star enough screen time to reward moviegoers with their rare skillsets. That isn’t the case here; every scene in this movie is rich, compelling and maximized character development…none more so than Christian Bale’s best performance seen to date--highlighted by awkward hair, protruding gut and his continuous out-of-breath scheming. This is a movie that will be talked about around office water coolers until the Oscars are handed out in late March. Don’t miss out on the discussion or a great movie from “the feet up”.
