Movie Review: Bully

School is a place where children should feel safe and able to learn. Unfortunately, this is not always the case as demonstrated in the powerful documentary, The Bully Project. The film does a nice job of portraying how some children feel powerless and alone when bullied by their peers. The harsh reality of how the hallways or bus ride to school can be pure torture to some kids. And how many kids (and some teachers) stand by and ignore the bullying that takes place.
One aspect of the film that I found to be most alarming was how some staff at the school seemed totally unequipped to handle bullying and often implied that the victim of the bully was partially to blame. If anything the film left me feeling frustrated with way in which the adults handled the bullying situations. One aspect I wish the documentary covered more of was strategies individuals can use to help deal with bullying, especially when they can’t seem to get support from the school administration.
All in all, the film is powerful and captures the harsh reality of bullying. The film is definitely a must-see film for teachers, parents, middle school and high school students.
