"At times like this, I'm best alone" utters Daniel Day-Lewis' character, Abraham Lincoln. And he's right. As the pressures to end the Civil War mount, our 16th president believes the time favorable to vote on the Thirteenth Amendment outlawing slavery. Between both issues, Lincoln is left to make decisions on life & death, inequality & justice, and slavery vs. We find him very much alone--even within his own family. In historical films where the audience already knows the outcome ahead of time, it's sometimes difficult to keep viewers relishing for more. But not in this movie. Daniel Day-Lewis IS Lincoln and you sense that in the very first scene he's in. In fact, every appearance by Lincoln takes on a different feel than other parts of the movie--whether he's telling a story, visiting a hospital or dispatching orders to General Grant. This movie is a must-see because when our Nation was facing her heaviest burden, she responded and survived. Stronger. And better. "Lincoln" is going to clean up at the Oscars next month. Grade: A
