The Spanish Civil War...

An orphanage in the middle of nowhere...

A ghost that wants revenge...

When I first watched this film, I didn't like it at all. There are some films though that I give a second chance, and I am glad that this was one of them. Now I know that I didn't like it because I didn't understand it.

It is a tale of deformity; just as Spain was deformed at that time, ('the devil's backbone' is a birth defect). This deformity is shown to us in the physical and the mental. The characters draw you into the film, (it seems to speed by in no time at all), and every character is believable. Good triumphs in this film, but it is it feels like a small victory. In the final scene we see the boys leaving the orphanage to the next adventure, and the future will not be so easy.

For all of it's bleakness, it is a beautiful film.
