There’s something about Alexandre Dumas’ 1844 screened adaptation of his best seller “The Three Musketeers” that has warranted more than twenty films and generations of fans. Is it the comedy, the romanticism and swashbuckling or even the wardrobe?
The comedy and the hansom heroes certainly helped this classic story but now the latest Paul W. S. Anderson version gets the 3D makeover. This worries me. Is this version so lacking in character, plot and narrative that it needs covering up with gimmicks? I wasn’t impressed by the trailer, which added to my fears of action over narrative. Yes, I know this is an action tale but it’s also loved in equal measure for its comedic banter and larger than life characters.
Orlando Bloom is not playing our dashing hero D’Artagnan but an evil Englishman, Buckingham. American actor, Logan Lerman, plays the lead with support from Christoph Waltz, Mads Mikkelsen and action woman, Milla Jovovich. I’m waiting for the day when 3D is dead for the second time in sixty years; any time soon now.
