stpatricksdaymovies.png

St. Patrick’s Day is not just about green beer, Irish music and parades.  It’s also a day to enjoy some Irish-themed flicks.  I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite movies to watch this time of year.  Be sure to share your favorites or highlight some of the films I might have missed in the comments below.

1.       The Quiet Man (1950)- Nominated for Best Picture Academy Award, The Quiet Man is a humorous St. Patrick Day favorite about a former prizefighter who returns to his native Ireland and falls in love.

2.       Waking Ned Devine (1998) – The residents of a small town in an Irish coastal town lost their friend Ned Devine who died after he discovered he had won the lottery.  His friends try to find a way to claim the money and share it... with the whole town. A hillarious comedy perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or any day

3.       Finian’s Rainbow (1968) – In what was Fred Astaire’s last musical, Astaire plays a leprechaun in this American musical film directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

4.       Da (1988) – An Irish-American playwright returns home where he encounters his recently deceased father's ghost. Martin Sheen and Barnard Hughes play father and son.

5.       Once (2006) – With the Oscar-winning song “Falling Slowly” this is a film that you’ll love watching at any time of year.  The story is about a Dublin musician played by Glen Hansard who meets a fellow musician (Marketa Irglova) who helps him write some of his best music to date.

6.       The Secret of Kells (2010) –  An Oscar nominated animated film that tells the story of a young boy living in Ireland.

7.       The Commitments  - A talented group of Dublin kids join forces to start a 1960s rhythm'n'blues band. Great performances and music make this a favorite any time of year.

8.       An Everlasting Piece (2000) – A comedy with two wig salesman based in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

9.       Darby O’Gill and The Little People (1959) – A classic Walt Disney film about a Irishman and his battle  with leprechauns.

10.   The Secret of Roan Inish (1994) - A magical tale of a young Irish girl's search for her baby brother with the help of friendly seals and a mythical sea creature. Based on a classic Celtic folktale.
