This week's movie fan profile features Sean Kelly. He has a degree in Cinema and Media Studies from York University in Toronto and has written about film in his blog Sean Kelly on Movies since 2004. He also does some freelance film writing and is currently a contributor for TheSubstream.com.
Q. Was there a particular film that sparked your interest in writing about movies? If so, what movie and why?
A. I have always liked watching movies, but the film that lead me down the road to film studies was probably 2001's Donnie Darko, which I also consider to be my all-time favourite film. The film's complicated plot really got me thinking and I hit the web to find explanations for the narrative. I started blogging about film soon after.
Q. What is your most memorable movie moment?
A. It's so hard for me to pick just one. I guess I'll remain on the topic of Donnie Darko and point out the montage in the high school, set to Tears for Fears "Head Over Heals," which introduces every one of the central characters in, what appears to be, a single continuous shot.
Q. Movie theater or home...where do you prefer to watch movies?
A. Until they invent 50 foot television sets, there is no better way to experience a film than in a movie theatre. I would go further and say that I prefer film projection over digital and it's quite sad that the former is being discontinued.
Q. What is your favorite movie quote?
A. Once again, I can't pick just one. From Donnie Darko:
Donnie: Why do wear that stupid bunny suit?
Frank: Why do wear that stupid man suit?
Q. How many movies do you think you’ve watched in your lifetime?
A. It will be impossible for me to give an exact number, but it's definitely more than 2000.
Q. What movies are you most looking forward to seeing later this year?
A. Looper, Skyfall, The Hobbit, and Django Unchained are probably the big ones I'm looking forward to.
Q. What type of movies are you typically drawn to and why?
A. I am a big fan of genre films (action, sci-fi, horror) and I have the belief that they deserve just as much attention and respect as the more "serious" films that get nominated for Oscars and such. That said, I will see just about anything and I have a wide variety of tastes when it comes to movies.
